Exercise your way to better health

When you’re experiencing a low mood, anxiety or depression, moving your body or eating well is often the last thing you feel like doing. Feeling tired and having a low level of motivation are common, and when you don’t feel your best it can be a real challenge to get going again.

Regular exercise, along with a well-balanced diet and regular mental health checks can help you have more energy, feel renewed and lift your mood. Here are some simple tips to improve your physical and mental health through regular exercise.

Explore your neighbourhood

A great way to introduce exercise into your life is to explore your local area. Find out where the best walking paths and bushland walks are by contacting your local government council.

Make it snappy

One of the best things about walking is that it doesn’t need to be rigorous or time consuming. A brisk walk is a great way to help boost your mood and is easy to fit into your busy schedule.

Talk it out with a professional

We provide friendly, professional, and evidence-based psychology services for people experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns across the Perth metropolitan area. Clients referred by a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician are eligible for a Medicare rebate. If you choose to self refer and you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for a rebate. Call us today on 1300 820 398 to speak to one of our friendly team members about our mental health services.

Bring a friend

Exercising with a friend can help motivate you to keep up your fitness routine. Whether it’s setting a regular time to meet a friend at the gym, joining a team sport or turning a coffee catch up into a walk around the park, it’s more fun and more satisfying when you have someone to talk to!

Make it part of your day

Working exercise into your day is an easy way to keep fit. Catch the bus, walk to work or take the stairs instead of a lift. Instead of emailing a colleague, try walking to their desk to talk to them. It all adds up!

Keep it fun

By finding an exercise that you like, exercise won’t feel like a chore. If you enjoy nature, go for regular walks. If you like to meet new people, join a community sports team. If you like to try new things, try belly dancing, hula hooping or a Zumba class!

The important thing is to just get started.
